  • Must be United States Citizen.
  • Must be 21 to 35 years of age. (Military Veterans have extensions per state law)
  • Must possess High School Diploma or GED.
  • No felony convictions.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.


The City of Lincoln utilizes two lists for hiring new personnell:  New Hire List and Lateral Hire List



The Lincoln Police & Fire Commission conducts testing for the position of police officer every 2 years.  The current New Hire List expires September 14, 2019.

Testing Process

  1. Written Test - testing is conducted through National Testing Network.  There is a $49 fee to take the written test with National Testing Network.  Testing locations are located throughout Illinois with the closest testing location at Parkland College, 2400 W. Bradley Ave, U Building, Room 203, Champaign, IL.
  2. Oral Interview


All passing applicants will be scored based on the written test and oral interviews on a preliminary list.  Military points can be added and a final list will be established.  To be hired from the list by the police department, applicants will be have to pass the following:


  • Comprehensive Background Investigation
  • Psychological Test
  • Polygraph
  • Drug Testing/Medical Exam


If you are hired by the Lincoln Police Department then we will send you to the necessary training required by State law.  You can also complete the training on your own at a certified police training academy in Illinois.  A list of training facilities can be found on the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board website.   Please note that academies in Illinois require you to pass the ILETSB POWER Test prior to admission.  Failure to pass the POWER test will result in immediate termination.  Please review the POWER test requirement prior to application.

If you are certified as a law enforcement officer in another state you may qualify for a transition course through the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board to gain your Illinois certification.    More information can be found on the ILESTB website

Lateral Entry - If you are currently employed by another law enforcement agency inside of Illinois for the past 3 years, you may qualify for Lateral Entry.  You can complete an application and submit it to the Lincoln Police Department.  The current Lateral Police list expires June 15, 2018.
